Basketball’s regular season finishes up

    The regular season came to a close Saturday for local varsity basketball teams, with several games taking place over the past week. The playoff portion of the schedule began Tuesday with the girls’ preliminary round, with the boys’ prelims slated for today.

    The Eastern Maine Tournament, held at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, will begin Friday.
Summaries of last week’s contests are as follows;
  Fort Fairfield girls 44, Fort Kent 22 — At Fort Kent Friday, Taylor Churchill scored a game-high 16 points, including four three-pointers, in Fort Fairfield’s win against the Warriors. Chelsey Pelkey and Kayla Giberson chipped in 10 and nine points, respectively, for the Tigers.
Shyla Bouchard, who transferred from Fort Fairfield last summer, tallied seven points to lead the 2-5 Warriors.
Katahdin boys 62, Central Aroostook 51 — The Panthers lost the Thursday evening home game, but the highlights were provided by Central Aroostook senior Chandler Brewer, who had been out all season with a knee injury.
Brewer started on Senior Night and made a layup on his team’s opening possession, drained a pair of technical foul shots in the second and hit a mid-ranger jumper and drained a three-pointer late in the fourth to finish with nine points.
Caribou boys 74, Presque Isle 47 —Dayne Savage tossed in 19 points to lead Caribou to Thursday’s victory in Presque Isle. Colby Holdsworth tallied 15 points and Donovan Savage had 14 for the Vikings.
For the Wildcats, who ended up 4-14, Chase Norton scored a team-high 15 points while Kyle Rider netted 11 points and Carter McLaughlin had 10.
Washburn boys 73, Easton 49 — The Beavers used a 21-7 third-quarter run to build a 19-point lead and win going away at home Thursday. Jarrett Olson powered Washburn with 32 points.
Cameron Bragg tallied 15 points and Cameron Preston added 11 points for the 16-2 Beavers.
Easton, 15-3, was led by Logan Halvorson’s 23 points, a total which included five three-pointers. Jake Flewelling chipped in with 13 points.
Southern Aroostook boys 57, Fort Fairfield 36 — At Fort Fairfield Thursday, Nolan Altavater led a balanced-scoring attack with 19 points to help Southern Aroostook defeat the Tigers. Justin Nelson added 13 points while Cameron Landry and Jackson Mathers chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Robbie Watson led Fort Fairfield with 10 points. Hunter Beaulieu and Isaac Cyr had eight points apiece.
The Warriors finished up their regular season at 17-1, while the Tigers went 14-4.
Limestone-MSSM girls 34, Ashland 33 — Last Wednesday at Limestone, Jackie Peers scored a game-high 17 points to help the Eagles notch the win in a close contest against Ashland. Madeline Williams recorded 10 points and Ellyzabeth Bencivenga had 10 rebounds for the winners.
For Ashland, Laura Sturgeon scored eight points, while Sophie Theriault and Mackenzie Carter each netted seven points.
Presque Isle girls 92, Caribou 43 — The Wildcats ended their regular season with a lopsided win over the Vikings at home last Wednesday.
Krystal Kingsbury led all scorers with 23 points. Hannah Graham tallied 20 points, including five three-pointers, and Olivia Hudson added 12 points, all on three-pointers.
Gabrielle Marquis paced Caribou with 12 points and Maddie Doucette and Bria Judd notched nine each.
Washburn girls 51, Easton 41 — At Easton last Wednesday, Mackenzie Worcester netted 19 points to lead Washburn to victory over the Bears. Joan Overman had nine and Laine Mette and Emmy Churchill six each for the Beavers, who finished undefeated on the campaign.
Kalie Ward was Easton’s top scorer with 12 points. Kylee Carter had 11 and Hannah Ferris nine for the 12-6 Bears.
Ashland boys 77, Limestone-MSSM 45 — Cody Blair scored the 1,000th point of his career and finished with 23 for the game to propel the Hornets past LCS-MSSM last Wednesday in Limestone.
Mark Chasse also scored 23 points and Michael Cook added 16 for the 7-11 Hornets.
Alex Sprague made four three-pointers and finished with 12 points to lead the Eagles.
Presque Isle boys 58, John Bapst 45 — At the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor last Wednesday, Kyle Rider scored 18 points to lead the offense for the winning Wildcats.
Andrew Paterson and Griffin Guerrette tallied nine and eight points, respectively, for Presque Isle.
Southern Aroostook boys 67, Washburn 58 —Southern Aroostook turned a five-point, first-quarter deficit into a nine-point halftime lead and went on to the win last Wednesday in Washburn.
Washburn trailed by 20 points, closed the gap to three in the fourth quarter, but could get no closer.
Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook was powered by Cameron Landry with a game-high 21 points. Nolan Altvater scored 19 and Jackson Mathers finished with 16 points.
Washburn was led by Bragg with 18 points. Olson and Noah Farley added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
  Madawaska girls 45, Ashland 29 — At Madawaska last Tuesday, Hannah Nadeau’s 13 points, Desiree Belanger’s 11 and Alexis Levesque’s 10 paced 6-11 Madawaska to the win.
Theriault’s eight points and six by Mackenzie Carter led 1-16 Ashland.
Fort Fairfield girls 61, Van Buren 52 — At Van Buren last Tuesday, Megan Jellison netted a game-high 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help Fort Fairfield pull ahead to victory in the second half.
Churchill added 17 points while Pelkey played a strong game with 14 points, 11 steals, six assists and seven rebounds.
Felisha Bouchard led all scorers with 28 points and she also had eight rebounds and six steals. Courtney Parent added 13 points for the Crusaders.
  Presque Isle girls 65, John Bapst 42 — At the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor last Tuesday, Presque Isle opened the second half on a 15-0 run to extend its three-point halftime lead.
Hannah Graham scored 11 of her 16 points in the third period. Krystal Kingsbury finished with 20 points for the Wildcats and Regan Nelson had 11.
Crystal Bell paced the Crusaders with 20 points.
   Ashland boys 74, Madawaska 43 — Blair scored a game-high 25 points to paced the Ashland Hornets over the hosts Owls last Tuesday.
Chasse added 14 points while Cook and Kyle Beaulieu chipped in 13 points apiece.
For Madawaska, Cedric Gendreau tallied 17 points and Greg Cyr had 16.
Washburn 90, Central Aroostook 37 — At Washburn last Tuesday, the Beavers outscored Central Aroostook 57-11 through the second and third quarters to win going away.
Washburn used a balanced scoring attack to improve to 15-1 with Olson and Farley leading the charge with 16 points apiece. McCall Turner and Alex Pelletier added 14 and 13, respectively, off the bench. Bragg chipped in with 10 points.
Caleb Harris led the Panthers with 11 points. Zachary Crouch and Riley McGrath added 10 and nine points, respectively.
   Fort Fairfield 76, Van Buren 46 — At Van Buren last Tuesday, Watson scored 18 points and Beaulieu added 16 as Fort Fairfield beat Van Buren. Chris Giberson had 11 points and Cyr tossed in eight more for the Tigers.
Andre Rossignol’s game-high 28 points were tops for Van Buren.
   Easton boys 42, Katahdin 29 — The Bears improved to 15-2 on the season by using stingy defense to beat Katahdin from Stacyville. The Bears received a balanced scoring attack, with Nick Clark’s 11 points leading the charge. Logan and Cody Halvorson each had eight points.
Nick Lane’s game-high 14 points led Katahdin.
