PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Aroostook County Action Program, Inc. (ACAP) has received a $36,190 grant from the Maine Cancer Foundation to provide a smoking cessation pilot program in June called Tobacco Boot Camp. Tobacco Boot Camp will be managed by Healthy Aroostook, a program of ACAP and a Healthy Maine Partnership.
“We are very excited about this project,” said Carol Bell, project director of Healthy Aroostook. “We are grateful to the Maine Cancer Foundation for providing funding to support what we believe to be an innovative approach to helping people quit tobacco for good!”
The program is now accepting applications, with a deadline of April 17. From there, applicants will be notified by May 1 of their acceptance into the program. It will accommodate up to 50 participants and is free of charge.
The application process begins with a call to Jo-Ellen Kelley, communication education specialist for ACAP/Healthy Aroostook.
“A referral from a physician’s office will be important,” Kelley said. “Selected candidates may need to be prescribed nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and must be considered in good health in order to attend Tobacco Boot Camp. The well-being and commitment of our participants is of utmost importance to us. We are committed to their success before, during and after the boot camp. If a smoker is serious about quitting, we think this is the ideal program for them.”
The Maine Cancer Foundation is dedicated to reducing the state’s cancer incidence and mortality rates by funding research, prevention, early detection and access to care, with 100 percent of funds staying in Maine.
