With so many negative and heart-wrenching stories that we hear in the news every single day, it is easy to shake our heads and say, “What is this world coming to?” or “Why is there so much pain and suffering in the world?” It is also very easy to lose sight of the good and positive events that take place in our lives every single day. Yes, the bad will always be there to report, but there are also so many blessings that we can be thankful for.

This year at the Central Aroostook Humane Society has started out as one of our best ever. Not only has the community support been overwhelming, but adoptions have continued to amaze us. With the terrible news of the abandoned animals in Fort Kent, we then experienced an outpouring of support to help pay for their recovery. All of the animals were well cared for by our staff and local vets and all found loving forever homes. No more neglect, no more hunger, no more suffering — these animals were definitely the lucky ones.
There are many more pets that suffer at the hands of uncaring, heartless people who have no business ever owning a pet in the first place. With each seizure or rescue comes the support from so many.
The comments and encouragement on our Facebook page are amazing. Many people offer information on pets they are concerned about or can identify those pet owners that may abandon or neglect their pets. There are many that share our posts — especially in the event of a lost pet. We have seen so many pets reunited with their families, all because their information and photos were shared and posted by so many of you.
The girls have recently had their computer ability upgraded and have loved being able to post available pets’ photos immediately. They have also been posting the lucky pets that have just been adopted.
We have seen quite a few adoptions in the past few months and the number of animals coming through our doors has declined. We hope that the reason is the fact that many of our cats are already altered before being adopted, which completely eliminates the chances of unwanted litters. That is huge and the ultimate answer, we feel, to controlling future unwanted litters.
We continue to be grateful for the incredible employees that we have at the shelter: Betsy, Sharon, Crystal and Dezarai. These girls work so hard to give each animal a chance for a better life. Yes, I would say that we are definitely feeling the love and support of everyone in and around our community.
