Excellence coupled with compassion
To the editor:
We are so fortunate to have Dr. James Hotham and his entire staff at Hotham’s Veterinary Services in Presque Isle.
I recently went through a very sad, stressful time with my beloved shih tzu, Baby Boomer. He became ill very suddenly and so unexpectedly. I knew he needed medical care and he was immediately seen by Dr. Hotham. The diagnosis was made in a very timely manner and his treatment began right away.
Boomer had to be hospitalized and the staff was so good whenever I called to check on him. Dr. Hotham also would always talk to me himself or call me right back if he wasn’t available at that moment. He is always so patient and takes the time to explain just what is going on and what treatment is needed and why.
While Boomer was at the hospital, even on the weekend, Dr. Hotham kept me informed of how he was doing. I could also go and visit Boomer and I saw for myself where he was being cared for and what a good little spot they had for him. I knew he was petted, talked to, cared about, and paid attention to. He even had a big “stuffie” in his bed with him.
Boomer had the best medically but he also had the best personal attention too.
As it turned out I did make the decision to let Boomer stop fighting. Dr. Hotham and Dr. Charles both told me that there was no right or wrong decision. Sometimes I still wonder if they might have pulled him through but …. I just felt in my heart and looked in Boomer’s eyes and sensed I had to love him enough to let him go. And even in that, I was given all the time I needed and there was so much compassion and so much genuine caring for my little guy and for myself as well.
I cannot recommend this doctor and his staff highly enough. Thank you all so very, very much. God bless!
