PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Snow may still be on the ground, but thoughts of summer and all things floral are on the minds of members of the Presque Isle Garden Club, as they prepare to kick off the 2015 growing season next week.

“The Garden Club met recently to plan its schedule for the coming season. Outings, overnights and visits to members’ gardens highlight the activities,” said Roberta Griffiths, club president.
Griffiths said the members will meet on Tuesday, March 17, to view videos of the Pennsylvania Flower Show.
“Members will share their stories of success and failures regarding their gardening experiences,” noted Griffiths.
April will find the group trying something a bit different from past years.
“In April, we’ll join the Aroostook Birders on the annual spring waterfowl walk in Fort Fairfield and Easton to view migrating ducks and geese,” she said.
On May 19, Jane Bonenfant will host the club, when Donna Keegan, proprietor of Myrtle Tree Farm, will discuss plants and flowers necessary to attract butterflies.
“In June, members will visit Margie Hunter’s gardens to enjoy her peonies and other spring flowers,” Griffiths said.
July will see club members venturing across the border.
“A visit to see the heathers in Sue Brown’s gardens will take place in July, followed by a ‘Downton Abbey’ Tea. We will be visiting Le Petit Ecole gardens in Notre Dame du Lac on July 21,followed by a visit to St. Jacques Botanical Gardens,” she said.
Another field trip is planned for August.
“In August, club members will travel to St. Andrews, N.B., to visit the Kingsbrae Gardens,” said Griffiths. “And the September meeting will take place at the summer home of Jane Bonenfant at Portage Lake.”
Yet another cross-border adventure is planned in October.
“On Oct. 3, members will travel to Fredericton, N.B., to visit the Boyce Farmers’ Market and the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. The Garden Club will bring its year to a close on Oct. 12 with its annual meeting and potluck supper at my home, with a program on the proper techniques of forcing bulbs presented,” said Griffiths.
Also serving as officers of the club are: Donna Keegan, vice president; Jane Bonenfant, secretary; and Martha LaPointe, treasurer.
Anyone who is interested in joining or learning more about the Presque Isle Garden Club is invited to contact any of the officers for more information.
