4 UMPI hoop squad members make All-Independent team
The University of Maine at Presque Isle was well represented on the Association of Division III Independents All-Independent Basketball Teams, which were announced recently.
Chase Vicaire was voted to the first team and Kevin Collins was named to the second team. In addition, Nick Lenhard and Maurice Harris received honorable mention.
Vicaire, the Owls’ leading scorer at 14.5 points per game, ranked fifth in the association in scoring and led AD3I in three-point field goal accuracy, hitting 45.7 percent of his long-range attempts. The 5-11 junior guard from Mattawamkeag became a key component in UMPI’s stingy defense as evidenced by his average of 3.9 rebounds per contest, good enough to rank 13th in the association.
Collins, of Oxen Hill, Md., was named Rookie of the Year as well as securing a spot on the second team. The freshman’s 12 ppg average ranked 10th in AD3I and he was fifth in in steals, while notching double figures in points 15 times during the season.
Lenhard was the primary point guard directing an efficient offensive attack that depended upon precision passing and good basketball decisions. The tough sophomore import from Falcon, Colo. led the Owls in assists (3.1 apg), which ranked fifth in AD3I.
Harris was a two-way threat, scoring 9.8 ppg, while grabbing 6.2 rebounds per contest to rank 15th and sixth, respectively, in the association. The freshman from Miami, Fla. was second in blocked shots and had three statistical double-doubles during the season. Harris secured eight or more rebounds nine times and scored 15 or more points seven times.
Trey Bardsley, a junior guard from Nebraska Wesleyan University, was named the AD3I Player of the Year, while Joseph Cocozello and Dale Wellman were named co-coaches of the year. Cocozello led St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn) to an 18-10 mark, while Wellman guided Nebraska Wesleyan University to a 13-13 record.
