Volleyball tournaments held throughout region
The Aroostook League girls’ and boys’ volleyball tournaments were held in various locations last week, with the Washburn and Presque Isle girls and the Houlton and Washburn boys capturing championships.
In Friday’s Div. II girls tourney played at Washburn District High School, the Beavers went 9-0 in pool play and defeated Wisdom in the finals, 25-12 and 25-12.
The Pioneers, 6-2 in pool play, bested Limestone-MSSM in one semifinal, 25-19 and 25-9, while Washburn topped Ashland in the other semifinal, 25-15 and 25-15.
Finishing behind Wisdom in Pool A were Ashland (6-2), Fort Fairfield (5-3), Katahdin (2-6) and Hodgdon (1-7). Trailing Washburn in Pool B were Limestone-MSSM (4-5), Easton (3-6) and Central Aroostook (2-7).
Mackenzie Worcester of Washburn was the tournament MVP. Also making the all-tourney team were Laura Sturgeon of Ashland, Francesca Armstrong of Limestone-MSSM, Hannah Sherman of Hodgdon, Teresa Maynard of Fort Fairfield, Madison Shaw of Easton, Joan Overman of Washburn, Molly Anthony of Central Aroostook, Courtney Stevens of Katahdin and Vanessa Pelletier of Wisdom.
In the girls’ Div. I tourney played at Presque Isle High School Thursday, the Wildcats went 6-2 in pool play to earn a spot in the finals, and then defeated Caribou (8-0 in pool play) by scores of 25-15 and 25-23 in the title match.
Houlton (3-5), Madawaska (3-5) and Fort Kent (0-8) were the other teams in the tourney.
Making the all-tourney team were Bria Judd of Caribou, Kendra Raymond of Fort Kent, Katie Cyr of Madawaska, Emma Hines and Elizabeth Ward, both of Houlton; and Erin Ackerson and Skylar Vogel, both of Presque Isle.
The boys’ Div. I tournament took place at Caribou High School Thursday. The Presque Isle Wildcats went 8-0 to lead the way in pool play, followed by Houlton (6-2), Caribou (2-6), Fort Kent (2-6) and Madawaska (2-6).
In the championship, Houlton downed Presque Isle, 25-23, 21-25 and 25-21.
All-tourney players were Kyle Rider of Presque Isle, along with Austin Scott and Dominick Judd, both of Caribou; Jake Hebert of Madawaska, Jake Drew of Houlton; and Josh Caron and Ryan Chasse, both of Fort Kent.
The Aroostook League boys’ Div. II competition took place Saturday at Fort Fairfield High School. In Pool A, Easton had the best record at 6-2. Limestone-MSSM was 5-3, Fort Fairfield 4-4, Katahdin 3-5 and Ashland 2-6. Washburn went 8-1 to lead the way in Pool B, followed by Wisdom (5-4), Central Aroostook (3-6) and Hodgdon (2-7).
In the semifinals, Easton topped Wisdom, 25-9 and 25-9, while Washburn downed Limestone-MSSM, 25-16 and 25-16.
In the championship, the Beavers got past the Bears, 25-12 and 25-20.
Alex Pelletier of Washburn was the MVP. Joining him as all-tourney players were Logan Dickinson of Easton, Noah Farley of Washburn, Caleb Daigle of Fort Fairfield, Grier Osterman of Limestone-MSSM, Devin McGraw of Katahdin, Wyatt Foster of Hodgdon, Mike Cook of Ashland, Dustin Pryor of Central Aroostook and Kevin Chamberland of Wisdom.
