The Central Aroostook High School gymnasium was named after Roger Shaw during the Fall and Winter Sports Award program, held at CAHS on Tuesday, March 24. Roger started his career in 1968 as a social studies and physical education teacher and coach at Bridgewater Middle School. He then moved to CAHS and taught civics and U.S. history for 14 years, as well as serving as the athletic director. He served as the CAHS principal from 1986-94, before becoming superintendent — a post he held for 20 years
Roger thanked the school board for the honor but was quick to point out that he had lots of support. He thanked his wife, Heidi, for walking beside him through every step of his journey. He also recognized his Administrative Assistant Kathy Miller for being so capable and long-suffering! She did anything he asked “just right”!
He stated “I thank you for this and will be forever grateful and appreciative of the extreme honor you bestow this evening, but more importantly for allowing me the opportunity to work with the wonderful students, a marvelous staff, in a superb school district in amazing communities. I believe SAD 42’s best days and times are still ahead.”
Preparing for pageants
This year’s pageants will be held on Saturday, April 18, beginning at 6 p.m. The five pageants will be done together, so mark your calendar now for this annual event. Tickets can be purchased in advance from members of the freshman class or from any contestant. Tickets are $7 in advance or $8 at the door.
Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday, April 7, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. The special guests were members and coaches of the Class D state champion cheerleaders — our own CAHS squad. During the season, the group practices six days a week for two to two-and-a-half hours as they work on their competition routine.
They will be judged on several things, including jumps, tumbling, dance, pyramids and more. Of the 20 members on this year’s team, four will graduate this year.
Coached by Sami Allen and Janice Mosher, they become a family as they encourage each other throughout the season. Sami stresses to the team that grades and family come before cheering, but she expects them to give their all in every aspect of their day.
Library news
For the safety of the patrons, the library will remain closed for a while longer as everything is restored and put back into place. The ceiling and lighting replacement has been finished but some shelving needs to be reinstalled so books can be shelved. We apologize for this inconvenience and look forward to seeing everyone when the library reopens.

Upcoming events for the week of April 15-21 include: Wednesday will feature the Beauty Parlor at 8:30 a.m., Wii Bowling at 9:30 a.m., Crossword Puzzle Challenge at 1:30 p.m., Young At Heart Senior Fitness at 2:30 p.m. and United Baptist at 6:30 p.m. Thursday will feature Beauty Parlor at 8:30 a.m., Bingo at 9:30 a.m. and Horse Racing at 1:30 p.m. Friday will feature Five Card Bingo at 9:30 a.m. and Music with Wendell Hudson at 1:30 p.m. Saturday will feature Bingo at 9:30 a.m. and Karaoke with the Deschesnes at 1:30 p.m.. Sunday will feature Full Gospel Assembly Service at 3 p.m. Monday is Patriot’s Day and will be a free day. Tuesday will feature the Beauty Parlor at 8:30 a.m., Bingo at 9:30 a.m. and Card Games at 1:30 p.m. All of these activities are subject to change. If you would like to volunteer to help with any of these activities, call Connie or Vicki at 768-4915.
Bingo
The William Cousins Post 118 of Mars Hill is hosting Bingo every Saturday evening from 7 p.m., until done. There are cash prizes. Refreshments are available. Come on out and enjoy a fun evening with friends!After The Bell
On Wednesday, April 15, the Running Club will be at Bigrock from 6-7 p.m.
Thursday, April 16, will be a pre-race dinner and celebration. Leave from school, Governor’s for dinner and a course run-through. Back to Fort Street at 6:30 p.m. Open to all members of the Running Club, $7 per child.
Friday, April 17, After The Bell jumps into spring at the House of Bounce at the Aroostook Centre Mall in Presque Isle. Bus leaves from school. Children needs socks and consent. Cost is $10 per child; concessions will be open. The bus returns to Fort Street at 5:30 p.m.
