Mapleton’s Desmond named CTE Student of Year
CARIBOU, Maine — Officials at the Caribou Regional Technology Center recently announced that health and medical sciences student Macy Desmond has been selected as the outstanding Career and Technology Education student of the year for 2015.
Desmond, a Presque Isle high school student, is the daughter of Kelly and Mark Desmond of Mapleton.
According to her instructor, Mrs. Brenda Thibodeau, “Macy is an exceptional student. She is always well prepared for class and works hard to do the best she can. She has been a joy to have in class and clinicals.
“She is social and caring to all residents and staff. I am very impressed with her desire to go far in the medical field,” Thibodeau added.
Desmond’s secondary school highlights include varsity soccer, varsity softball, student council, Class Cabinet, National Honor Society, serving as a freshman mentor for three years, and prom committee.
For community service, she has helped out at “One Two Three Let’s Go” for children. She has volunteered at the World Cup Biathlon, Mapleton Elementary School, Hilltop Elementary School, the Lighthouse and the Sportsman’s Show in Presque Isle. She also worked as an office aide at the technology center in Presque Isle.
Outside of school, Desmond is an active member of the State Road Advent Christian Church in Mapleton. She has a part-time job at the Mapleton Pizza House. In addition, she is a lifeguard and teaches swimming lessons. She says she likes to challenge herself with a busy schedule.
Desmond has earned the following certifications: Certified Nursing Assistant, Personal Support Specialist, first aid and CPR, lifeguard and water safety instructor.
Her plans for Future are to attend Husson University to become a pediatric nurse practitioner.
Desmond and guests attended an Honors Dinner hosted by the Maine Administrators of Career and Technical Education at the Lewiston Regional Technology Center on Saturday, May 2. The dinner recognized one outstanding student from each of the 27 technology centers in Maine.
