Memorial Day tourney largest ever
FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — The annual Fort Fairfield Athletic Boosters Memorial Day golf scramble was the largest tournament in its 18-year history, raising over $28,000 for the organization.
The tournament, an annual event at Aroostook Valley Country Club in Fort Fairfield, was held May 23 in memory of Thomas Ireland, Fred “JR” McGillan, Herb McGillan and Phillip “Gee” Roberts.
The two-day event began on May 22 with the family meal and plaque presentation to the families in an emotional evening. Over 60 family members and friends were in attendance to remember and honor the four outstanding community members and supporters of the boosters organization.
The following day, the full field of 160 golfers was treated to a great of day golf and a wonderful meal and awards presentation. The men’s team of Herrick Hansen, Brian Shannon, Dave Garnett and Les Smith took top gross honors in the men’s division, while the team of Bobby Russell, Joe Bernard, EJ Dorsey and Sean Bernard took first for low net.
The mixed team of Rob Hassencahl, Mona Perley, David Daigle and Michelle Daigle took low net honors and in the ladies division, the team of Taffy Shaw, Jane Towle, Allyson Juneau and June Gallant came away with the victory.
Longest drive winners were Brian Shannon in the men’s division and Dani Searles in the women’s division.
“We had 40 teams sign up, show up and finish,” said organizer Larry Gardner, “and with the cold weather, high winds and periods of hail and snow showers, that is a true testament to the toughness of the ‘County’ people and their support for our event.”
