Girls’ track team enjoys success

The Presque Isle girls track team under coach Ron McAtee wrapped up a very successful season at the state meet on Saturday with several Wildcat performers putting up solid performances.

The regular season had 20 young ladies participating on the squad. The freshman class included Elizabeth Deschenes, who participated in sprints and jumping events; Elizabeth Findlen (sprints, jumping, pole vault and hurdles), Isabelle Jackson, (distance running), Ande Kornachuk (sprints and jumps) and Maddie Wing (hurdles, shot put and javelin).
Wing qualified for the PVC championships in javelin, while Findlen made it in the pole vault.
The sophomore class included Skylar Vogel (shot put, discus and javelin), Cali Quirion (sprints and jumps), Emma Beaulieu (sprints and jumps), Tori Koch (sprints and jumps), Skyler McAtee (shot put, discus and javelin) and Grace Player (hurdles and high jump).
Vogel had a great season as she scored points in every meet. She qualified for PVCs in shot put and javelin as well as provisionally qualifying for states in the javelin. Koch placed first in the 100-meter sprint at PVCs and was third in the 400, while at the state meet she placed third in the 100, fifth in the 400 and sixth in the 200. Player qualified for the high jump at PVCs.
The junior class included Emily Colligan and Mandy Graham, who are both distance runners, along with Karen Jones (sprints and long jump), Regan Nelson (discus, shot put, and javelin), Madison Postell (sprints and hurdles) and Alyssa Sweeney (distance running). Colligan qualified for PVCs in the 1,600 and 3,200. Graham had a provisional qualifying in the 1,600 with a new PVC junior varsity championship record time of 5:54 in the mile. Nelson had a dominant PVC championship with a second in both the discus and shot put and a seventh in the javelin. She was an automatic state qualifier for the states in all three events and ended up third in the shot put and fifth in the discus. Postell also was a PVC qualifier.
The senior class featured Brynn Staples in the shot put, discus and javelin and Amanda Palmer in the high jump and long jump.
“We had a great season,” explained McAtee. “The girls worked hard all year, and it was really a pleasure to coach them. They made it an enjoyable experience all year long.”
