FF track had strong spring
FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — The Tiger track and field team has solidly performed in a season that culminated with the Class C state championships Saturday in Yarmouth.
First-year head coach Kyle St. Peter came to the program with an outstanding pedigree, having been a Div. I decathlete at the University of Maine at Orono for four years after a six year pre-college experience. His assistant coach, Hilary Saucy, is also a Div. I athlete in cross country skiing at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. She also placed 12th nationally at the Junior Olympics in the 1,500 meters. She previously coached at Presque Isle Middle School before coming over to Fort Fairfield this year. Both of these coaches are very pleased with the efforts of the Tiger tracksters, and saw outstanding gains as the season has progressed.
Leading the squad was senior captain Caleb Daigle. A four-year participant, Daigle set a school record in the 200-meter dash at the Aroostook County championships on his way to wins in the discus, 100-meter, and 200-meter events. He was named the outstanding meet performer, and qualified for the States in 100, 200, 400, discus and the 4×400 relay.
Other senior performers included captain Megan Jellison, who has also been solid, having automatically qualified for the States in the javelin. She also has participated in the shotput and discus with gains in each event. Ashley Levesque has competed in the high jump, the 300 hurdles, and the 100 hurdles, in which she provisionally qualified.
Toni Libby has participated in the 100 and 200 dashes and the 800 run. Dylan Love ran the 100 dash, Steven Wentworth the 800 and the 1,600 racewalk, for which he was a provisional qualifier. Brandon York has shown versatility, having competed in the long jump, shot put, javelin, discus, 400 and 800. He was a provisional qualifier in the 800. Dyllan Fox competed in the shot put, and speedster Johnny Theriault in the long jump, the triple jump, the 200, the 400 and the 1,600. Theriault had a provisional distance in the triple jump.
Junior participants included Lillian Ashby, who participated in the long jump, triple jump, 100 and 200. She had a provisional distance for the States in the triple jump. Junior Teresa Maynard had a provisional distance in the shot put, a provisional height in the high jump, and also participated in the triple jump. Lance McKenney, coming off an outstanding ski season, participated in the shot put, javelin, long jump and the 800, where he had an automatic qualifying time. Rounding out the junior class are Jacob Bynion-Cullins and Angela Simmons, who both worked hard at the javelin.
The sophomore performers included Sarah Beaulieu, who participated in the discus, 800, 1,600 and 3,200; Gregory Jellison in the 100 and 200, with a provisional time in the 100; Landon Kinney, did the high jump and 1,600; and Gabrielle Wortman, who did the long jump and triple jump, in which she had a provisional distance.
A strong freshman class was led by Marissa Brouette, who broke the school record in the pole vault and was an automatic state qualifier in the high jump and pole vault. She has also competed in the 100, 200 and 400. Jaydyn Fox was a provisional qualifier in the long jump and 100 hurdles as well as the 300 hurdles, while Colin Goshorn provisionally qualified in the pole vault and the 110 hurdles, as well as participating in the discus and 300 meter hurdles. Mackenzie MacDougal participated in the shot put, discus and javelin; while Julian McKenney participated in the pole vault, Nate Reynolds performed well in the 1,600 racewalk and the 1,600 and DialMarie Silva participated in the 400 and the 1,600 racewalk.
