Shaw earns prestigious academic honor
2010 PIHS grad is tops in conference
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Assumption College senior Brennan Shaw of Presque Isle joined Abigail Heroth, another Assumption senior who hails from Johnstown, N.Y., as this year’s Northeast-10 Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
This marks the second time since the award’s inception that Assumption has swept both the male and female awards as the Hounds now have a league-leading 12 overall scholar-athlete recipients. The pair was honored at the Northeast-10 Conference Awards Banquet in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. June 1.
“I am so proud of both Abigail and Brennen for their outstanding academic achievement throughout their careers at Assumption,” said Nick Smith, director of athletics and recreation. “They truly embody the phrase ‘student-athlete’ and are examples of the excellence that we hope that each of our student-athletes will aspire to achieve. They are great ambassadors of Assumption College and I would like to congratulate them both on this wonderful accomplishment.”
Shaw, the team captain and a 2014 Capital One Third Team Academic All-American, earned the Northeast-10 Sport Excellence Award in hockey for the second straight season. The three-time Northeast-10 academic all-conference honoree finished his career with a GPA of over a 3.9 as a business major. The 2015 class salutatorian, Shaw was the recipient of the Rev. Armand Desautels Award as Assumption’s “premier male senior student-athlete.”
On the ice, he finished his senior season with 12 points on seven goals and five assists while helping lead the team into the conference tournament for the first time since 2011. He is a 2010 graduate of Presque Isle High School and the son of Larry and Taffy Shaw of Presque Isle.
Heroth, a team captain and the 2014 Northeast-10 Conference Sport Excellence Award recipient for field hockey, was also a three-time academic all-conference honoree. A molecular biology and biotechnology major, Heroth finished her Assumption career with a remarkable GPA of over a 3.9.
A three-time member of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Team, she was also a three-time NFHCA Scholar of Distinction for earning a GPA of a 3.9 or higher. The recipient of the Rev. Armand Desautels Award as Assumption’s “premier female senior student-athlete”, Heroth helped lead the field hockey program to its first postseason berth since the 2002 season and a No. 9 national ranking.
