Kitchen trade-ins help fill local cupboards
CARIBOU, Maine — Haney’s Building Specialties, a Caribou business that has specialized in selling kitchen cabinets for the past 16 years, and Catholic Charities have come together to find a new way to help raise money to feed folks right here in the County with a kitchen trade-in program.
Haney’s Building owner, Troy Haney, shared the idea with Dixie Shaw of Catholic Charities a few months back, and after all the details were worked out it has become a reality. The company will offer a trade-in value for a customer’s old kitchen cabinets towards the purchase of a new kitchen. Once Haney’s removes the old kitchen, they will donate it to Catholic Charities to be resold and reused. The money from the resale will buy food to help the food pantries in the local area.
“The beauty of this program is that everyone wins,” Haney said. “The consumer gets money to spend towards their new kitchen, someone else will get a great price on a used kitchen that can be repurposed, and the food pantries get stocked with food that helps people in need in our local community.
“This also saves the consumer disposal fees at the landfill and all of the products get recycled and reused, which is great for the earth,” he added.
The business’ first kitchen trade-in has already been delivered to Catholic Charities and sold for just under $2,000, which will buy a fair amount of food to help out the cause.
Haney and Shaw are both excited about how this program could really make a difference in the months to come. A homeowner who gets a new kitchen can feel even better knowing the old materials will be recycled and help neighbors in need right in their own community.
This is not the first joint project between Haney and Catholic Charities; he worked with Aroostook Savings & Loan and Catholic Charities in the past for the 2011 Feed the County Summerfest.
He said he is always looking to help out in the local community and hopes that this project will help bring more awareness to the need to support great causes like Catholic Charities.
