WASHBURN, Maine — Mackenzie Worcester, a senior at Washburn District High School, and daughter of Larry and Kim Worcester, received the 2015 Principal’s Award, The award, sponsored by the Maine Principal’s Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.
Throughout her years at WDHS, Worcester has distinguished herself in the classroom and as an outstanding athlete. She has proven herself as a true leader both in academics and athletically. She has been an NHS member for two years, was sports editor for the WDHS yearbook, received the Phi Beta Kappa honor her junior year, has maintained highest honor roll status throughout her high school career and received the Highest Achiever Award for the past three years as well. Worcester received the top achiever award in 16 of 18 courses and has been selected as a Student of the Month all four years.
Athletically, Worcester had a brilliant career. She has been captain of many of the Beaver sports teams. She is participating in softball during her senior year and was on the varsity volleyball, cross country, soccer and basketball teams all four years.
Worcester was on the cross country state championship team her sophomore year. In basketball, she helped her team win state championship titles all four years and is a true leader. She also broke a record when she scored her 2,001st career point at the state finals this winter.
Worcester helped her soccer team achieve the state runner-up title her sophomore year. During her junior year, she and her teammates were the Eastern Maine and state runners-up. She was very influential in helping her team win the state championship soccer title her junior year. She is ranked third in girls’ state history for number of goals scored in high school soccer with 153.
Worcester has done a tremendous amount of community service work. She has taken part in Operation Christmas Child, Heidi’s Hope, Autism 5K Challenge and Ride Aroostook, helping to raise money for those charities. She has assisted the director of the Washburn Recreation Department program with numerous activities over the years.
She was a tutor for the summer school program and also volunteered at the high school during summer vacations, volunteered to help the junior high soccer coach with practices and also volunteered at the Beaver basketball camps.
Worcester and other award winners attended an Honors Luncheon in Bangor in April. The luncheon recognized the Principals’ Award recipients with the presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships.
