Nine departments compete in muster

    The Mapleton Fire Department sponsored the 80th annual Aroostook County Fireman’s Muster during the Mapleton Daze festivities on June 27.

The departments who participated made their first appearance during the parade.  Departments with crew and apparatus in the parade were Caribou, Washburn, Fort Kent, Mars Hill, Presque Isle, Ashland, Van Buren, Maine Forest Service and Mapleton.
At the conclusion of the three-hour event, trophies were awarded for the four events, and then the grand prize trophy to the overall winner of the muster.  First place for Best Operational Truck in the parade, Mars Hill; Best Marching Unit in the parade, Presque Isle.
Muster event winners were: Wet Line: Maine Forest Service, first place; Ropes and Knots, Presque Isle, first place; Bucket Brigade, Presque Isle, first place; and Sprinkler System, Washburn, first place.
The overall winner was the Presque Isle Fire Department.

Bean-hole-bean supper

    The Squapan Outing Club will be hosting their annual bean-hole-bean supper at Scopan Lake on Saturday, July 11 from 4-6 p.m. The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children under 12.
New this year will be a mini craft fair featuring quality handmade crafts made by camp owners, including wood crafts, primitives, and other unique items! Also on sale during the event will be Squapan Outing Club souvenirs — shirts, hats, mugs, totes, travel mugs and duffel bags. Entertainment will be provided by Fireman Fred Parsons.

Annual business meeting

    The Squapan Outing Club will be holding their annual business meeting for all camp owners on Sunday, July 12 at Dave and Phyllis McIntyre’s camp at 10 a.m. Among the agenda items will be voting will take place to fill four board of directors’ positions.

Chapman celebrates Centennial with cookout

    Chapman residents celebrated 100 years of being a town with a town-wide cookout on June 23. Nearly 150 people attended the event that was held at the Chapman Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club. A number of special recognitions were awarded, including to Merwin Welch as Chapman’s most senior life-long resident and to Chapman’s centennial baby, little Jaxson Ireland. Truly a good time was had by all.
The Chapman centennial committee unveiled a Chapman history book at the event. The book will be available in August and must be ordered and paid for by Aug. 1. The books are $10 and may be ordered and paid for at the town office or from committee members Sue Maynard, Leah Buck, Joyce Pendexter, Pam McEachern and Pat Sutherland.
