PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Aroostook Band of Micmacs is making plans for the annual Mawiomi of Tribes, or powwow, which will take place Aug. 21-23.

The band’s new cultural department has developed plans to improve community outreach and involvement in the annual celebration. While the Mawiomi typically draws in over 1,000 participants, many more are expected this year.

Organizers said local colleges, hospitals and military will have a presence at the event, including key speakers. Native experts will discuss Micmac culture with the public throughout the weekend. Additionally, all of the dancing, singing and drumming is open to the public to participate. An area will be designated for children’s activities and events.

Other events planned include free traditional meals, vendors with more festival-like foods, presentation of colors by the Army Honor Guard during the National Anthem to honor veterans, Micmac grand entries and vibrant dancers and singers. On Saturday night, there will be a professional fireworks show.

The event is open to the public, and is designed for members to share their culture with others, especially the surrounding communities of which they are a part.
