Registration ends today for two PI rec programs

The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department will continue registration through the end of today for a couple programs being offered later this month.

Soccer is for girls and boys in grades Pre-K through sixth. Cross country running is for grades 3-5.

Youth will be able to participate in both running and soccer if they choose. The programs begin Monday, Aug. 17. For each program, the fee for residents is $25. Non-residents must pay that fee plus a $50 per family fee.

Registration must be done in person at the William Haskell Community Center. For more information, call 764-2545.

Varsity round-robin at Presque Isle is Aug. 15

The 23rd annual Invitational Soccer Tournament will be held Saturday, Aug. 15 at the Johnson Athletic Complex in Presque Isle.

The event begins at 9 a.m. and will be played on three different fields. Signed up to compete are Ashland, Madawaska, Fort Fairfield, Fort Kent, Caribou, Van Buren and host Presque Isle.

The tourney has a round-robin format, with the top two teams advancing to the championship round, which begins at 4:35 p.m.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students and concessions will be available on site.

DeMerchant umpires in national tournament

Dave DeMerchant recently returned from umpiring in a national softball tournament which took place in Salem, Va.

The Presque Isle resident, a veteran of 30-plus years as a board umpire, was one of 66 umpires selected to work in the ASA/USA 14-and-under girls’ fast-pitch tourney. The event was held July 26-Aug. 2 and included 127 teams. DeMerchant was one of just two from Maine selected.

It was the second national tournament that DeMerchant has officiated. The other one took place in 1997 and was a men’s Class C slo-pitch event in Orlando, Fla.

Spud Speedway results

Spud Speedway hosted races Aug. 9 and first-place winners were as follows:

Pro stock: Glenn Rasmussen, New Denmark, New Brunswick; street stock: J.R. Howlett, Presque Isle; Northern Lights: Matt Lloyd, Drummond, N.B.; Enduro: Bobby Anderson, Limestone; Senior Champ: Damian Theriault, Caribou; Junior Champ: Brayden Thibodeau, Caswell; and Kids Kart: Gage Theriault, Limestone.

A $10,000 purse will be up for grabs in the Pro stock class this Saturday at the Caribou track. Racing gets underway at 7 p.m.

Soccer regular season set to begin Friday

The varsity soccer regular season begins later this week with the Central Aroostook girls and boys making the trip to Washburn Friday, Aug. 14. The girls’ game is at 3 p.m., followed by the boys’ game at 5 p.m.

The Beaver squads are back to work Monday, Aug. 17 with home games against Wisdom. The start time for both the girls and boys is 4 p.m.

The Panthers will play their first home games Tuesday, Aug. 18, as Fort Fairfield pays a visit. The boys will play at 5 p.m. and the girls at 7 p.m.

The Class D state champion Ashland Hornet girls kick off their schedule Tuesday, Aug. 18 with a 4 p.m. contest at Easton, as Audra Kirk makes her varsity coaching debut with the Bears.

The Hornet and Bear boys’ teams will also square off that afternoon at 4 p.m.
