MARS HILL
By Tomi Henderson
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met Aug. 11 at the Aroostook Health Center. The guest speaker was Wayne Hanson, who is with Wreaths Across America.
He spoke about the organization that started in 1992 when excess wreaths were taken to Arlington National Cemetery. The first year, there were 5,000 wreaths taken by one man on one truck. Members of the Maine State Society in DC helped lay them in a day’s time.
The project has grown each year since 2005, when the story went viral. This past year, over 716,000 wreaths were laid on veteran’s graves in over 1,000 locations around the United States and the world. Founder Morrill Worcester’s goal of laying a wreath on every stone at Arlington was also reached in 2014, with over 30,000 volunteers helping.
