Subsequent classes will be Tuesday, Sept. 1, Wednesday, Sept. 9 and Thursday, Sept. 10. Class time will be 6-9 p.m. each night. Students must be 10 years old to enroll and those between age 10 and 12 must be accompanied by an adult. For more information or to register, call Kathy at 425-3771.
Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met Aug. 18 at the Aroostook Health Center. The guest speaker was Amanda Cushman.
Along with Stephanie McKeen and Stephanie Coffin, Cushman is one of three leaders of the newly formed Kids Klub, which is open to kids in grades Pre-K through sixth.
Their motto is “building a stronger community — one kid at a time.” The program includes biking, running, hiking and other activities. They also perform community service projects. This summer they raised around $1,000 for County Dialysis by doing a bike-a-thon and did a five-mile run during Homecoming to raise funds for a local family.
They have also had Adventure Camp for a week, with special speakers such as Rich Hoppe, whose talk was about black bears. They also learned about healthy snacks, made a first-aid kit and learned how to (try to) make a fire with a flint. There was also a soccer camp held with University of Maine at Fort Kent star Andre Anderson. Among the things that the kids worked on were team building and problem solving.
