WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King recently announced that the U.S. Department of Education has awarded 12 Maine colleges and universities a total of $3,649,824 in grant funding through the Student Support Services Program.
Among those benefiting are three institutions in Aroostook County: Northern Maine Community College in Presque Isle, which will receive $247,583, the University of Maine at Presque Isle, to be awarded $301,355; and the University of Maine at Fort Kent, slated to receive $288,181.
The Student Support Services Program is a federally-funded TRIO program that helps institutions of higher education provide opportunities for academic development, assist students with basic college requirements, and guide students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary educations. TRIO programs support low-income and first-generation college students by steering them toward the academic support services that will help them succeed.
“The education offered by our state’s colleges and universities is among the best in the country,” said Collins and King in a joint statement. “This funding will ensure that Maine’s colleges and universities have the resources they need to help students graduate.”
