PI Kennel Club to host
dog training workshop
The Central Aroostook Kennel Club will hold a two-day workshop with dog trainer and author Dee Ganley of Enfield, N.H., Saturday, Sept. 26 and Sunday, Sept. 27 at the Presque Isle Inn and Convention Center.
Saturday’s workshop, “Changing People, Changing Dogs,” is based on Ganley’s book of the same name. Participants will learn to work and live with reactive/aggressive dogs. Topics will include dogs who are stressed, management and positive reinforcement, creating environments for success and behavior modification techniques.
This will be a working seminar for four or five dog/handler teams with specific needs and issues to work on or problems to solve. There are unlimited auditor spots and CEUs are available.
Sept. 27 will feature “Teaching Self Control Skills” with lecture, training discussion, fun and agility games with the dogs. Attendees will learn reward-based training and techniques to tell dogs what to do to earn food, play and praise.
There is room for up to 20 dog/handler teams with unlimited auditors. Dogs attending must not be aggressive. It is recommended owners bring crates for their dogs.
Prior registration is required. Registration fees include lunch and all materials. Check-in and registration will be from 8-9 a.m. with workshops starting at 9 a.m.
Ganley will also be available Friday, September 25, 2015, for a limited number of private consultations. She is prepared to help owners deal with issues such as destructiveness, biting, failure to housetrain, separation anxiety, aggression, fear, hyperactivity, leash pulling, overstimulation, and introducing new children or animals into the household.
The consultations will be approximately an hour long and include her book “Changing People, Changing Dogs” and an individual training plan. The cost is $100.
