Successful quilt show helps museum

WASHBURN NEWS

The Salmon Brook Historical Society’s Third Annual Tea & Quilt Show held on August 2, 2015 was a huge success. The weather was perfect, the guests were plentiful and the quilts were numerous and beautiful.

Word of the show has spread among County quilters as evidenced by the 132 quilted pieces in this year’s show. There were 12 more quilters than last year and 40 more quilts. Fresh quilts are displayed each year. Several in the show were antiques that were draped on the collection of carriages and sleighs that fill one room in the Aroostook Agricultural Museum.
They were honored this year to show Dina Kelley’s quilt made of Aroostook County blocks which were designed by her. Sadly, Dina has passed away, but her daughter very kindly allowed the quilt to be shown. Many quilters attending the tea mentioned they had purchased patterns from Dina when she had her quilt shop in Presque Isle and had either completed a similar quilt or at least started one. Dina’s beautiful quilt drew much attention.
The team which set up for the show created a booklet of quilts for all, prepared the tea, gave tours of the Farmstead, borrowed furniture, took down the show, transported quilts, toted potted plants and arranged flowers. Team members included: Wanita, Larry and Athena Hallowell, Jill Fox, Rita Kingsbury, Bob Bell, Thyme, Winter and Tracy Fox Whitten, Mavis Churchill, Carol Castle, Patty and Jim Reed, Louise, Gary and Meghan Cole, Ruth and Bill Flewelling, Pauline Tompkins, Jackie Pribble, Kasey Haley, Kyla Cunningham, Carol White and Dino Aergerter.
Sally Derrenbacher, Ardis Libby and Gwen Bragg each poured tea at one of the three sittings. Those who donated food and loaned one thing or another are too numerous to list but everyone’s generous effort was appreciated.
The Salmon Brook Historical Society would like to heartily thank the following individuals who entered quilts of all sizes, table runners and wall hangings in the show: Joanne Stacey, Ruth Flewelling, Dina Kelly (by her daughter), Anita Dow, Jackie Riberdy, Judy Babbidge, Charlotte Wilson, Lois Nickerson, Rita Kingsbury, Debbie Hoyt, Sue Brown, Bonnie Lavway, Cathy Kingsbury, Laken Kingsbury, Millie Bennett, Beth Ann Walker, Monika Baker, Ruth Jardine Leland, Gwen Bragg, Linda Howe Nadeau, June Churchill, Joanne Bouchard, Mary Jane Sperrey, Sharon Pelkey, Wanita Hallowell, Sheila Belyea, Sherrie Adams Chicos (by her sister, Sheila), Nancy Todd, Anita Dickinson, Jill Fox, Beth King and Alma Fogg.
Thank you for all the wonderful support we received. The income from the show and the sale of tickets for our raffle quilt is all profit and critical to the maintenance of the Benjamin C. Wilder Farmstead and the Aroostook Agricultural Museum.
The raffle quilt winner will be drawn Oct. 3 at the Harvest Supper the society plans to co-sponsor with the Rotary Club.
Anyone interested in purchasing raffle tickets should contact any member of Salmon Brook Historical Society.
Tickets for the SBHS Fourth Annual Tea & Quilt Show on August 7, 2016 will be available in the early summer.
