The cross country season got underway Saturday with Presque Isle in a meet at Hermon which featured a unique format. The course was 1.7 miles in length and there were individual races and relays for girls, boys and mixed teams.
Both coaches, Mike Waugh of the girls and Evan Graves of the boys, were impressed with their Wildcat teams’ debut.
Freshman Madison Jandreau, a transfer from Caribou, was part of a three-person relay team along with seniors Emily Colligan and Mandy Graham. The team placed second in 35:13.04 and Jandreau posted the eighth fastest of the day in 11:43.46. Graham led the way in 11:20.28 and even outkicked a competitor at the finish line, according to Waugh.
For the boys, Jason Bartley had the fastest leg in the boys’ relay in 9:30.2 and overall the third fastest of the day. Freshman Trace Cyr teamed with the Bartley brothers — Jason and Max — and turned in his team’s second-fastest time. The trio was fourth overall in 30:51.88.
“We have a small, young team, so it was a great experience for the kids and got us off to a good start,” Graves said. “This is a great group of guys who are working hard and beginning to learn about running and getting in shape.”
The top Wildcat co-ed team consisted of Tommy Popov and Isabelle Jackson, who raced to a time of 23:49.11.
Presque Isle will compete next in the Ellsworth Invitational Saturday, while most of the other County schools will be involved in a meet to take place at Washburn this afternoon beginning at 4 p.m.
In golf, Presque Isle debuts Friday with a meet in Brewer which will also include John Bapst and Caribou. Fort Fairfield has already been in action against Hodgdon and will host Central Aroostook this afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
