Wildcat boys gain first soccer victory
Ashland girls win big again behind Carter’s 4 goals
The Presque Isle boys were able to experience victory for the first time this season. Following a rugged 0-2-1 stretch against Fort Kent, Caribou and Ellsworth, coach Joe Greaves’ Wildcats bounced back Saturday by beating John Bapst, 2-1, in a match played at the University of Maine at Orono.
Twin brothers Ryle and Randon Mortland each scored for PI — Ryle’s coming on a penalty kick and Randon’s on a header off a Kyle Rider assist 30 seconds after Bapst had tied the match.
“We are starting to do some of the small things better that win games,” Greaves said. “There is better communication on the field, we are winning more balls out of the air, and some of our young players are getting accustomed to their new roles.”
With a rematch against Fort Kent looming tonight (the teams tied 2-2 in Presque Isle Aug. 27) and Old Town coming to town Saturday, Greaves said there is more work ahead for his squad.
“Moving forward we have to continue to improve as a team defensively, not just the four defenders but when the other team has the ball we all have to play defense and mark up,” he said. “Offensively, we need to be more aggressive attacking the goal and we need to shoot the ball and get our shots on net.”
The Wildcat girls were beaten 1-0 on Anna Zmitstowski’s goal with 20 minutes to play. The shots were nearly even, with PI holding a 16-15 advantage. However, John Bapst’s Kayla Massey notched the shutout with 11 saves and the Wildcats’ Jillian Flynn collected nine. PI is now 2-2 on the season and also take on Fort Kent today and Old Town at home Saturday.
The Ashland girls and boys kept up their winning ways. The Hornet girls stopped Southern Aroostook last Wednesday at home, 10-1, with Mackenzie Carter pacing the offense with four goals and Morgan Doughty adding two goals and two assists. Savannah Flint, who was honored before the game after becoming the school’s all-time goal leader, put in two more and also garnered an assist.
The Hornets moved to 7-0 and have outscored opponents by a 69-2 margin.
The Hornet boys are 5-2 after stopping the Warriors, 3-1. Kyle Beaulier had two goals and Alex Keiser netted the other for Ashland. Lucas Craig had an assist and Timmy Tarr made four saves on eight shots.
The Ashland teams faced their toughest test Tuesday when they made the trip to Fort Fairfield to take on the Tiger squads who both went in undefeated.
The Fort Fairfield teams captured shutout wins over East Grand in their only matches last week and stayed undefeated at 5-0 in the process.
The girls shredded the Vikings, 10-0, as Chelsey Pelkey put in three goals and has assists on three others. Taylor Churchill also scored three times and notched an assist to help power the offense. Sarah Watt recorded the shutout by saving four shots.
The FF boys took a 9-0 victory as Chris Giberson scored three goals and Isaac Cyr and Jonah Daigle two each to spearhead the winning attack. In goal, Dalton Cassidy saved six shots for the shutout.
The Easton and Central Aroostook teams met up Friday, with the visiting Panthers recording the sweep. In the CA boys’ 6-3 victory, Dane Kingsbury and Caleb Harris each scored twice, with Alex Boulier and Dustin Pryor tallying the other goals. A quick start was pivotal as CA took a 5-1 lead at intermission.
Drew Sotomayor scored all three Easton goals.
In the girls’ match, the Panthers rolled to a 5-1 win as Karli Levesque and Jadeyn Giberson booted in two goals each. Molly Anthony provided the other goal, while Emma Bonner prevented the shutout by scoring on a penalty kick with just over six minutes to play.
The CA boys are now 4-1 and the girls are sporting a 3-2 record.
The Washburn boys shut out Wisdom Friday, 4-0, with all the goals scored by senior forward Noah Caron, all in the second half. McCall Turner assisted on two of the goals and Caleb Thompson had the shutout in goal.
At Easton Monday, Justin Davis scored with 1:15 left in the second half as Washburn tied the Bears, 3-3. Jovanni Taveras and Caron provided the other goals for the 6-4-1 Beavers, while Sotomayor had another hat trick for Easton (4-4-1).
The game was halted three minutes into overtime due to lightning.
The Washburn girls lost their second consecutive 1-0 game to Easton. The latest one, played Monday, saw Izzy Morin of the Bears (3-6) score the lone goal. The Beavers, who also fell to Wisdom Friday, 8-2, are now 1-9-1 and have been shut out seven times.
The Beavers teams now face a lengthy break due to the harvest recess. They do not play another regular season match until Oct. 15, when they take on Van Buren.
