UMPI Outing Club slates fall events
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The University of Maine at Presque Isle Outing Club is offering fall adventures and activities for campus and community members to enjoy, including an overnight camping weekend complete with a hike to Katahdin as well as an outdoor rock climbing trip.
The season kicks off Saturday, Sept. 26, when the club hosts an outdoor rock climbing activity at Acadia National Park. The rain date for this event is Sept. 27, 2015. Participants will climb on the face of Otter Cliff. No climbing experience is required but practice on the indoor climbing wall is recommended prior to the trip.
The cost is $30 for UMPI students; $45 for community members. Transportation, a guide and gear will be provided. Participants should sign up before Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 4 p.m. and register at Gentile Hall. There will be a pre-trip meeting Thursday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. in Gentile Hall to learn about trip details and practice rappelling indoors.
The adventure continues Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 2-4, when the club hosts a three-day, two-night Baxter High Peak Weekend. Participants will leave at 4:30 a.m. Friday morning, hike to Katahdin and then drive to South Branch Pond at the north end of Baxter State Park for overnight camping.
On Saturday, the group will hike the Traveler loop and then enjoy another night of camping before heading back to Presque Isle Sunday. Participants should register before Friday, Sept. 25. The cost is $50 for UMPI students; $75 for non-students. Registration includes transportation, food, camping fees, a guide, and camping gear.
Participants must be able to walk or hike for 10-12 hours in order to take part in this trip.
For those interested in joining the UMPI Outing Club for its regular meetings, they will be held Thursdays at 1 p.m. in Gentile Hall. Dates include Sept. 17, Oct. 1, Oct. 15 (with a focus on shelter building), Oct. 29 (with a focus on fire building), Nov. 5, Nov. 19 (with a focus on map and compass reading) and Dec. 3 (holiday celebration).
