Liberty named Maine State Prison warden
BANGOR, Maine — Randall Liberty, who has served as Kennebec County sheriff for the last seven years, has been tapped to serve as the next warden of the Maine State Prison.
Liberty will assume his new duties on Sept. 28, Deputy Commissioner Jody Breton of the Maine Department of Corrections announced in a news release.
Liberty holds a master’s degree in leadership from Liberty University of Lynchburg, Virginia, and completed the University of Virginia’s law enforcement executive graduate studies program.
He also holds an associate’s degree and a bachelor’s degree in public administration from the University of Maine at Augusta. Additionally, he is a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, and the National Sheriffs’ Institute.
Liberty has more than 30 years of leadership experience in the fields of corrections and law enforcement, the last seven as Kennebec County sheriff, which also involves overseeing operations at the Kennebec County Correctional Facility.
He also served in the U.S. Army, the Army National Guard and Army Reserves from 1982 through 2006, holding positions that included command sergeant, military policeman, corrections sergeant, drill sergeant, airborne and air assault soldier, mountain infantryman and West Point instructor.
He served in Korea, Italy and Iraq, receiving numerous awards, the most recent of which was the Bronze Star for his service in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Liberty succeeds Rodney Bouffard, who has been promoted to the position of associate corrections commissioner.
The state prison houses 916 prisoners and has a staff of 410, according to its website.
