Wildcat soccer teams remain in hunt for playoffs

The Presque Isle Wildcats’ girls and boys continue to stay in contention for playoff berths following results of their matches played last week.

The PI girls blanked Foxcroft Academy last Wednesday, 3-0, before playing to a 2-2 draw in a home match Saturday against Hermon.
The Wildcats are now at 5-2-1 on the season and in seventh place heading into an important match this afternoon at Mount Desert Island.
Against the Ponies on the road, senior Taylor Williams had two goals and Tori Koch notched the other in the shutout victory. Jillian Flynn saved seven of 13 shots for the shutout.
Three days later, Hermon came to town with its unbeaten record, but could manage only a tie against the ’Cats. Emily Wheaton put Presque Isle on the board early in the contest off a Maddie Michaud assist, but Hermon scored the next two goals to grab the lead. Williams then converted a penalty kick during the second half to knot the match, and that is how it would end. Flynn had 15 saves on 17 shots for PI.
The Wildcat boys lost in double overtime to Foxcroft Academy, 2-1, last Tuesday, before besting Hermon Saturday, 2-0.
PI was 3-4-1 and in fifth place in Class B North entering yesterday’s match at MDI.
In the loss, Randon Mortland tallied on a first-half penalty kick to put the Wildcats in front, but the Ponies tied it with a second-half goal before Tobias Hogfeldt tallied with just 27 seconds left in the second OT.

Presque Isle bounced back at home by scoring twice in the final 12:05 to top Hermon. Griffin Guerrette scored the first one, while Cooper Madore netted the second two minutes later courtesy of a Ryle Mortland assist. Freshman Jason Dumais, in his first varsity start in place of injured starter Patrick Cash, garnered the shutout by saving six of nine shots.
On Saturday, both the girls and boys will host Foxcroft Academy in a doubleheader beginning with the girls’ game at 1 p.m.
Last Tuesday, Mackenzie Carter scored four times in the Lady Hornets’ 8-0 win at Limestone. With the victory, Ashland is now 9-0 and leads the Class D North standings.
Timothy Tarr saved 10 of 13 shots, but the Ashland boys (5-4) were unable to score in a 1-0 loss to the Eagles. Tobyn Blatt scored 10 minutes into the match for the lone goal. The Hornets are still in third place.
The Hornet squads were in Dyer Brook for matches against Southern Aroostook Tuesday and next will host Hodgdon Saturday, with matches at noon and 2 p.m.
In Class D, the Fort Fairfield boys are undefeated at 8-0 and atop the standings following last Tuesday’s 3-0 victory over Van Buren. In the home match, sophomore Isaac Cyr had a hand in all three goals, scoring two in the second half after assisting Jonah Daigle one his just over a minute into play. Ryan Player and Landon Kinney had assists on Cyr’s goals.
Dalton Cassidy made five saves on eight shots for his fourth shutout of the season and third in the last four games.
The Tiger girls continued their solid play with a 7-1 win over the Crusaders. Fort Fairfield improved its record to 7-1, good for fifth place in the division, as Emma Campbell and Morgann Towle led the offense with two goals each. Alexis Coiley, Taylor Churchill and Gracie Griffeth provided the other FF goals, with Hannah Kennedy scoring for Van Buren.
The Fort squads will host Central Aroostook in crucial matches Tuesday, with the girls’ game at 4 p.m. and the boys playing at 6 p.m. The Panther girls go into that match with a 5-2 record, in fourth place in Class D, while the CA boys are 6-1 and just behind the Tigers in second place.
Washburn has been idle since Sept. 14 due to no games being scheduled during the school’s harvest recess. The boys are 6-4-1 and in fourth place in D North and the girls 1-9-1 (11th) entering their next games, set for Oct. 15 at home against Van Buren.
Easton is another team in the midst of a lengthy break in between matches. The boys hold a 5-4-1 record, good for sixth in the standings, while the girls are 4-6 and in 11th place. The Bear teams have not played since Sept. 16 and aren’t scheduled to play again until Oct. 13 when Van Buren pays a visit.
