Volleyball team splits with UMM
The University of Maine at Presque Isle volleyball team traveled to Machias on Saturday and was able to gain a split of a doubleheader. The Owls dropped the first match in straight sets before sweeping the last match.
In the opener, the Clippers took control early and won three straight sets by the scores of 25-18, 25-16 and 25-20. Hannah Williams had 14 assists in the loss, while Abby Jewett recorded seven digs and Morgan Swan added six kills for the Owls.
The Owls were able to turn the tables in the second match, sweeping it by scores of 25-16, 25-14, and 25-13. Jewett and Hannah Boyce each recorded 11 kills in the well-rounded attack. Jewett would also add 18 digs in the effort, while Williams recorded 28 assists.
UMPI now has a 3-17 record and returns to action on Saturday when they will face Green Mountain College and Lyndon State. Both matches will be played at Lyndon State College in Lyndonville, Vt.
UMPI women suffer shutout loss
The No. 6-ranked Albany College of Pharmacy defeated UMPI Sunday, 6-0.
Sophomore Allie Lopez was outstanding in goal for the Owls, registering 28 saves in the match. She stopped 18 Albany shots in a first half that saw the Owls playing well, down only 2-0 to the high-powered Albany attack that features the two of the top USCAA goal scorers in the Nation.
The Owls could not keep the positive momentum in the second stanza as Kayli Smith scored just 30 second into the final period. Albany tacked on three more goals to secure the victory.
Erin Tersegno tallied four goals on the day for the winners.
The Owls, now 3-5-1 overall, will next play the fifth-ranked UM-Machias Clippers in a road contest this afternoon. The squads played to a 3-3 draw earlier in the season. On Saturday and Sunday, UMPI will be on the road to take on Pine Manor and Southern Maine Community College, respectively.
Owl men tie one, lose another
The UMPI men’s soccer team visited Vermont Technical College Sunday and dropped a 4-1 decision. Johnny Theriault scored off a Derek Healy assist for the Owls’ lone goal, which came in the 34th minute and while UMPI was trailing, 3-0.
On Saturday, the Owls played the St. Joseph’s College Fighting Saints in Rutland, Vt., and the two teams played to a 2-2 draw. Cody Blair scored UMPI’s first goal off a Theriault assist, while Joshua Cross scored the team’s second, with Dan Swallow picking up the assist. Caleb Bragg-Grady played well in goal for the Owls, who are now 1-10-1 on the campaign.
Coming up next are road games Saturday at Pine Manor and Sunday at Southern Maine Community College.
