CARIBOU – Ulla Maria Monica Soderberg, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 5, 2015, surrounded by her family.
Monica was born in Stockholm, Sweden, Europe and was educated there in high school and business school. She was active in the Scouts and worked in an office. She later operated a small ski resort in northern Sweden.
The 15th of March 1958 she married Iver Soderberg from Woodland, Maine. They were married in New Sweden. They had three children: Kirk of Standish, Karen, and her husband, Roger, of Portland, and their children Holly and Dana; Carl, and his wife, Lisa, of Caribou, and their children, Emily and Anna.
Monica owned and operated Monica’s Scandinavian Gift Shop in Caribou and retired after 34 years. Monica also started the New Sweden Folkdancers in preparation for the New Sweden 100 Year Celebration. She retired with her group of teenage folkdancers after 25 years. She was recognized by the Sons and Daughters of the New Sweden Colony for having “promoted and directed the preservation of our Swedish folkdance tradition.”
Monica also belonged to the Homemakers Extension Group in New Sweden for more than 35 years.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at 1 p.m. at the
New Sweden Cemetery. Refreshments will follow at the New Sweden Covenant Church following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions are welcomed by the New Sweden Covenant Church, 40 Westmanland Road, New Sweden, ME 04762, and the New Sweden Historical Museum, P.O. Box 33, New Sweden, ME 04762.
