MMG nets state award for employee retention
BANGOR — A Presque Isle company was among five entities and one individual recognized as a Champion of Economic Development by The Maine Development Foundation (MDF) during its recent annual meeting in Bangor.
MMG Insurance Company was honored as the Champion of Attraction, Retention and Engagement. This award honors an organization that is committed to attracting a strong workforce to its region and the state.
The MDF highlighted the close alignment of leadership and economic growth, a topic that mirrors its belief that productive workers are educated, healthy, innovative, and engaged in their community and the economy. New MDF president and CEO Yellow Light Breen spoke to the statewide membership for the first time, highlighting accomplishments and opportunities to move the Maine economy forward.
“We were so pleased to honor this year’s Champions of Economic Development,” said Breen. “They are each models of innovative solutions, sustained commitment to action, and real results in enhancing economic opportunity and a high quality of life for all Maine people.”
Headquartered in Presque Isle, MMG is a regional property and casualty insurance company with operations in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Pennsylvania and Virginia. The company has over 115,000 policyholders, writes in excess of $160 million in premiums and has roots in Maine dating back to 1897.
Breen highlighted MMG’s initiatives. “MMG has been a true leader in Aroostook County and often a catalyst ‚Ä“ with a special focus not only on developing the company’s own workforce, but also on enhancing the community of young professionals through Momentum Aroostook and Empower Aroostook, programs designed to retain, develop and attract young professionals and leaders for the region as a whole.”

The MDF also recognized the following: Tyler Technologies Inc., Champion of Education and Workforce Development; the Maine IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence, Champion of Innovation; The Bangor Entertainment Cluster, Champion of Regional Asset Development; Renys, Downtown Visionary Award; and Meredith H. Jones was presented with the Kenneth M. Curtis Leadership Award.
The annual meeting also included a panel discussion on the role of philanthropy in economic development.
The MDF is a private, nonpartisan and nonprofit corporation with a membership of 270, created by the governor and Legislature in 1978 to promote the economy. Funding comes from a variety of sources including fee-for-service, private contributions, membership, foundations, and state government contracts.
