Owl men gain second win of season
The UMPI men’s soccer team shut out Southern Maine Community College in Portland Sunday, 3-0, for just its second victory.
The team is now 2-11-1 after Mohamud Abukar scored twice and Cody Blair tallied the other goal off a Johnny Theriault assist. Caleb Bragg-Grady had six saves in goal for the Owls.
On Saturday, UMPI dropped a 4-3 decision to Pine Manor in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Derek Healy, Brandon Danforth and Blair were the goal scorers in the loss. Sean Barbosa assisted on Danforth’s goal.
UMPI plays at Fisher College Saturday and at Wheelock College Sunday.
Women win one of three
The Owl women’s soccer team blasted Pine Manor Saturday, 10-0, in a match played in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
UMPI got two goals each from Mikaelah Tracy, Jessy Dickison and Autumn Poulin, while Bethany Heald, Sam Nadeau, Jordi Legassie and Abby Deveau netted one apiece. The Owls outshot Pine Manor by a 34-2 margin.
The Owls dropped their other two matches as they were shut out both times. They lost to UM-Machias last Wednesday, 2-0, and to Southern Maine Community College Sunday, 4-0.
UMPI stands at 4-7-1 and like the men’s team plays at Fisher College Saturday and at Wheelock College Sunday.
Volleyball team splits Vermont matches
The Owl volleyball team lost to Lyndon State and then turned around and beat Green Mountain College in matches played Saturday at Lyndonville, Vt.
The scores of both matches were 3-1. In the win, the game scores were 25-20, 25-16, 19-25 and 25-20. Hannah Boyce had 13 kills, 11 service aces and five digs to lead the way, while teammate Abby Jewett collected 10 kills and 13 digs. Hannah Williams had 20 assists, four kills and seven digs in the victory.
Coach Mark Kornachuk’s team is now 4-18 overall heading into today’s doubleheader at UM-Fort Kent.
Golfers take dual match over MMA
The golf team at UMPI won a 12-6 match against Maine Maritime Academy Blue Saturday in Castine. Eric Depner and Jordan Beaulier won their matches for the Owls, while Hazen Dauphinee and Anthony Chaccho were beaten. Beaulier was low man on the day with a 78.
Karson Easton, a Mapleton native playing for MMA, shot an 87.
Cross country squads run in Standish
The Owl squads were in Standish Saturday for the Runnin’ Monks Invitational, with the men finishing seven out of 13 teams and the women ending up in 12th place.
Sully Jackson led the UMPI men by placing sixth with a time of 29 minutes and 7.9 seconds on the 8K course. Chenoa Jackson paced the Owl women. Her time of 23:03.5 put her in 46th place.
Coming next for the teams are the Maine State Championships at Bowdoin College in Brunswick Saturday afternoon.
