Boulier speaks at Rotary Club meeting

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met Oct. 13 at the Aroostook Health Center and the guest speaker was Elaine Boulier, Superintendent of SAD 42. She has been in education for 30 years, spending sjx years as principal at Fort Street Elementary School before becoming superintendent last year. She is also the curriculum director for the school.
Boulier spoke about the initiatives taking place in education. The Smarter Balance testing will no longer be used, with a new test in the works by spring for grades 3-8 and juniors.
They are also working on PBE — Proficiency-Based Education — and plan to be able to graduate students with PBE by 2020-21. There are currently many county schools working on this, with around 13 people meeting monthly to share ideas and plan. PBE will allow students to work at their own pace — both at school and at home via the Internet.
The district is working on evaluations for teachers, principals and superintendents. They plan on continuing their partnership with Northern Maine Educational Collaboration and Habits of Mind. Another thing being looked at is using “The Power of Why” — a book that helps figure out why we do what we do and learn how and what steps to take to improve lives.
SAD 42’s vision statement is “The vision of SAD 42 is to provide rigorous, meaningful learning experiences that will engage learners and empower them to become responsible, productive citizens and creative thinkers in the global community.”
