The Mars Hill Rotary Club met Oct. 20, 2015 at the Aroostook Health Center. Special guests were Floyd Rockholt and Rachel Rice of the Presque Isle Rotary Club.

Rice showed a slide show and spoke about the “Purple Pinkie” project with several local Rotary Clubs holding events to raise awareness and money to be used to continue the fight against polio.
Since 1985, Rotary and its partners — the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation — has helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children, mobilized public support for ending polio, contributed over $1 billion US to the global polio eradication effort and helped solicit financial support from donor governments resulting in over $9 billion in contributions.
In 1985, there were over 350,000 cases of polio. In 2014, that number had dropped to 359 cases, which represents a 99 percent reduction. Rotary and its partners are working hard to raise the funds necessary to vaccinate the children in Afghanistan and Pakistan, which are the only two countries left with polio cases. Nigeria has been polio free for one year, and after two more years without a case diagnose will be officially polio free!
