To commemorate Veterans Day on Nov. 11 and to say “Thank you for your service” to area veterans, the Presque Isle Elks Lodge 1954 will again host a free stew night for all military veterans on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015.
The meal will be held at 5 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 508 Main Street in Presque Isle.
According to Alan Harding, exalted ruler of the Presque Isle Elks, the menu will include chicken stew, ployes, beef stew, hot rolls, corn chowder, corn muffins, chili, fresh biscuits, a variety of desserts, coffee, tea and soft drinks. The Elks will serving this meal from 5-6:30 p.m. without any charge to all military veterans. The event is open to the public, with a charge of $5 per person for any non-veterans who wish to attend.
Live musical entertainment will be provided throughout the evening, and door prizes awarded.
Recognizing veterans for their service and assisting them with their needs as civilians continues to be one of the Elks’ most important programs. It is a fundamental precept of every Elks Lodge that, “As long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them.”
Ronald L. Hicks, grand exalted ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, proclaimed the month of November to be Veterans’ Remembrance Month by stating, “The Order of Elks remembers our veterans throughout the year, but in November, as we give Thanks for all of our blessings, we pay special tribute to our veterans for their sacrifices.
“Nov. 11 is Veterans Day, a day for all Americans to reflect upon the freedoms we enjoy and to honor veterans by saying, ‘Thank you’ to the men and women who have served in the Armed Forces. Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans,” said Hicks.
In keeping with the proclamation, the Presque Isle Elks will be serving a variety of stews free of charge to any military veteran, as well as providing a time of entertainment and socialization, in order to recognize and thank veterans.
Transportation to the Elks Lodge for this event may be arranged by calling the lodge at 764-0985.
The Presque Isle Elks will assist the local VFW post with its Thanksgiving dinner for veterans Sunday, Nov. 22, at the Hayward-Frazier Post 2599, 6 State Road, Presque Isle.
