Micmac vets honored in PI photo exhibit

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine A new photography exhibit will debut in Presque Isle Sunday, Nov. 15, 2015 at the Mark and Emily Turner Memorial Library gallery, offering a never-before-seen view of Micmac veterans.

Through an outreach grant from the Maine Humanities Council, the Aroostook Band of Micmacs Historic Preservation Department has worked with tribal families and veterans to collect images that will appear in the exhibit, called “Micmac Veterans: Duty, Honor, and Culture.”
The exhibit will open Sunday at the Mark and Emily Turner Memorial Library Art Gallery from 4:30-6 p.m., and will remain on display in the library until Dec. 15.
“This exhibit is very unique and special in many ways,” stated Jennifer Pictou, tribal historic preservation officer (THPO) and exhibit curator. “Our veterans are not always listed on the public memorials and honor walls, yet they have been a part of this country’s military heritage from the beginning.
“These images are important because we asked our veterans and their families to provide what they could and the result has been amazing. We are grateful to honor our veterans in this way,” Pictou added.
The curator and members of the Micmac Service Unit Veterans Committee will be on hand for Sunday’s official opening.
