MAPLETON NEWS
By Jennifer Buzza
Mapleton Girl Scout Troop 1133 celebrated its seventh rededication ceremony at the Mapleton United Methodist Church Nov. 10. The ceremony began with the introduction of the five troop members present, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and the Girl Scout Promise.
The girls were recognized for the awards they had earned from the beginning of their new Scouting year in September to date. Making the presentations were co-leaders Nancy Winslow and Laurie Amero, while co-leader Jennifer Buzza read the list of awards for each Cadette.
The girls received patches for spring registration, GSME’s “Be a Reader,” yard sale fundraiser, spaghetti supper fundraiser, auction fundraiser, rededication ceremony and Cadette badges “Budgeting,” “Comparison Shopping” and “Think Big.”
Following the awards, the troop took part in a candlelight ceremony. The three leaders addressed the girls, asking, “What would the world be like if…?” relating each question to omitting parts of the Girl Scout promise and 10 laws. After each question, a candle was extinguished to remind the girls that if we stopped living the promise and laws, the world around us would become a place full of inconsiderate, disrespectful and self-serving people.
Each of the leaders, along with the five Cadettes present, made a verbal commitment during the ceremony to live a part of the Girl Scout law, followed by lighting a candle. The formal ceremony concluded with the girls singing six verses of the traditional Girl Scout song, “Make New Friends.”
Collection for neighbors
Mapleton Elementary School is collecting items to benefit Caring Area Neighbors for Cancer Education and Recovery (C.A.N.C.E.R.). Students, faculty and staff are collecting items for the bags that are given to patients during their first trip to the clinic. Bags are also given to patients that begin treatment outside of the County when they are put on C.A.N.C.E.R.’s bread delivery list.
Some of the things that are being requested for the clinic bags are travel size shampoos, conditioners, lotions, body wash, toothpaste, hand sanitizer, soap, wet wipe packs, crossword/puzzle books, toothbrushes, blank cards with envelopes and pencil sharpeners.
Although this is a school-wide drive, the community is welcome and encouraged to contribute. Any donations can be dropped off in the main office at the school by Friday, Nov. 20. A presentation will be made to the group the following week.
