Funds expanded to aid job seekers
ACAP Workforce Development, a department of Aroostook County Action Program, Inc. (ACAP), has announced the expansion of a Job Driven National Emergency Grant (JDNEG).
“Funding for this grant comes from the Department of Labor,” explained Christy Daggett, senior manager. “While the 2008 recession officially has been over for five years, long-term unemployment‚ people who have been out of a job for six months or longer‚ remains high by historical standards.”
In addition to serving the unemployed who have exhausted weekly benefits, this grant can now assist those who have been looking for a job for six month or more, or who have lost their jobs suddenly or stopped operating a small business.
“Many of these people may be eligible to receive support that will help them find their next work opportunity,” said Daggett.
Working with an ACAP job counselor, individuals receive customized support depending on their circumstances, needs and future desires.
Job counselor Lance Albair said, “I have personally benefited from these services and appreciate the opportunity to help others receive the same level of support. I think people are surprised to hear about the many services that are provided through this program. For example, we have a number of individuals who, because they are attending training or classes, often quality for additional help with childcare and transportation to help them focus on achieving their education and career goals.”
Assistance from ACAP Workforce Development can include job search and placement assistance, developing personal employment plans, counseling on how to achieve goals, tutoring, study skills training, high school completion, college preparation and transition activities, occupational training (like CNA and CDL certifications) and training on how to start a business, as well as paid on-the-job training and work experience in high-wage, high-demand careers.
Daggett shared, “We recently helped a 60-year-old gentleman who had been out of work for more than a year and about to have his unemployment benefits end. He was interested in becoming a long haul truck driver. JDNEG funds helped pay for his training and he is now driving for a national trucking company.”
Services are offered throughout Aroostook County. The level of support varies and job seekers should contact ACAP Workforce Development at 207-764-3721 for more information.
