PROBUS Club learns about legal aid for elders

The regular monthly meeting of the Probus Club was held Nov. 19 at the Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce office in Presque Isle.

President Dana Crory called the meeting to order at 10 a.m. He turned the session over to Jenny Joles, program planner, who introduced the guest speaker, Attorney D.L. Kenney. Kenney is the staff attorney representative for Legal Services for the Elderly, a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide free, high quality legal services to Maine’s socially and economically needy elderly age 60 and over.

After her broad and very informative presentation, she answered many questions on issues such as power of attorney, financial exploitation, scams and abuse.

Janet Snow gave a thought-provoking reading entitled, “Why You Bought that Ugly Sweater” from the Atlantic Monthly, written by Eleanor Smith.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:30 a.m. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, Dec. 17, at Northern Maine Community College. This will be the Christmas dinner meeting.
