WATERVILLE & PRESQUE ISLE – Myrtle Audrey Stock, 96, went to join Jesus and her family in heaven on November 28, 2015, at Lakewood Manor in Waterville. She was born September 8, 1919, in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of Walter Joseph LaFayette Finn and Ella (Farrell) Finn.
In Exodus 20:12 the promise with the command was demonstrated in Myrtle’s life – “Honor your father and mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.”
She was educated in New York area schools and graduated from Jamaica High School in 1938. On April 7, 1940, she married Kenneth B. Stock and had four children, Kenneth C. (Charlie), Richard, Ronald and Carolyn. Her life was spent in New Jersey, and then Maine where they settled in Princeton operating Stock’s Luncheonette. They were wonderful years for her children and other teens in the area. Presque Isle came next and lastly Ken and Myrt settled in Waterville.
She was employed from 1989 to 2003 by the Salvation Army as an administrative assistant. She worked at Temple Academy from 1985 to 1989 and served as a classroom monitor. She loved kids and enjoyed every moment there. Earlier she also was an Assistant Director for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program in Presque Isle.
Myrtle enjoyed playing cribbage. crossword puzzles, knitting and crocheting. Her life was devoted to serving others and her chosen jobs reflected that.
She was the heart of the Salvation Army’s Christmas Castle Program for many years. Her welcoming manner and the warm atmosphere she created there, brought many people in to joyously decorate, pack boxes, and share long days of volunteering. While she called to get more people to adopt families, and filled out lots of Christmas Tree tags, her late husband, Ken, helped with kettles and kept the “crank” going.
Seventy years of marriage gave them a great platform to encourage hurting couples to work things out. She was always ready to give advice along with a hand up. She herself had experienced being in need when she lost everything in 1950 to a devastating hurricane. She knew how it felt to ask for help and it gave her a wonderful sense of compassion and connection. All who knew her will miss her.
The family wishes to thank the staff and nurses at Lakewood Manor for their wonderful care. She was so happy to be “their hall monitor”, greeting everyone as they came and went.
They also wish to acknowledge the hours spent with mom by, Germaine, Judy, Dennis, Maureen, Nancy, Joan, Harley and Justin. The support by all our friends made such a difference.
Myrtle is survived by son, Kenneth C. Stock and wife, Cynthia of LincolnWoods; daughter, Carolyn E. Johnson of Waterville; four grandsons, Devin Stock and wife, April of Pittsfield, Brian Stock and wife, Christy also of Pittsfield, Kyle A. Johnson and fiancée, Tracy Meridos of Braintree, MA, and Brooks K. Johnson; her very much loved nieces, Maureen, Kathy, Marilyn, Sally, Lynn, Donna and nephews, Dennis, John, Robert, Allen and Kevin; and the in-laws that were in her heart, John, David, Nick, Sue, Barbara, Regina and Kathy along with all their children. Aunt Myrt loved them all.
