Mr. Helstrom cries and dyes hair pink

 WASHBURN NEWS

Steve Helstrom took over as chorus and band teacher for Washburn District School at the beginning of this school year. When he began the year, he made a compact with the students that if their music moved him to tears he would dye his hair pink.

The week before the holiday break, that is exactly what happened.

The middle school chorus went to sing for the residents at Story Hill Estates, and their beautiful voices brought tears to the eyes of their teacher.
A few days later, being a man of his word, Mr. Helstrom appeared at school sporting some lovely pink highlights in his hair.

Serving weekend meals

Washburn’s Trailrunners Clubhouse is now open weekends throughout the snowmobile season for breakfast on Saturday and Sunday and for lunch on Saturdays.
They will be serving from 7 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday and from 7 a.m.-12 noon on Sunday.

Auditions upcoming

Auditions for the Children’s Stage Adventures production of “The Princess and the Pea” will be held at 11:45 a.m., Monday, Jan. 4 at the WDES gym.
Approximately 50 local children in grades 1-8 will be cast to appear in the show with CSA actors/educators Lauren Lamber and Joel Oramas.
The performances will take place on Friday, Jan. 8, at 6:30 pm at Washburn Elementary School. Tickets will be available at the door for $5 each.
“The Princess and the Pea” is a new musical version of the classic fairy tale. As a Prince comes of age, his doting parents tell him it is time to marry a Princess. No Princess can be found locally, so the Prince goes on a quest to find her. Finding no suitable Princesses on his quest, the Prince returns home. Then on a dark and stormy night, there is a knock at the door and soaked stranger enters the castle and introduces herself as a Princess! The Queen does not believe her and puts her through a test to prove she is a true Princess and worthy of the Prince. Silliness and song carry the story to a happy ending for all.
Rehearsals will be conducted from 2:30-7 p.m. every day of the week prior to performances, although not all cast members will be needed at every session. The first rehearsal will begin about 30 minutes after the auditions.
Lauren Lambert of Milford, N.H., and Joel Oramas of Bridgeport, Conn., are the Children’s Stage Adventures actor/educator team. Both have extensive backgrounds working with children in theatre.
Based in Sullivan, N.H., CSA is a nonprofit organization in its 17th year of touring the country. This coming year hundreds of cast members will take to the stage to the delight and applause of their families, friends, communities, neighbors and teachers.
