Owl women break losing streak
with victory over UNB-St. John
The UMPI women won for the first time after dropping their first 11 games to open the season.
The Owls picked up a 50-47 victory over the University of New Brunswick-St. John at Wieden Gymnasium Sunday in day two of the Can/Am Tournament.
UMPI jumped out to a 13-0 lead and was up by five at halftime. The guests got to within a point late before the Owls’ Kylee Alton drained a pair of free throws to account for the final margin.
Amanda Hotham had 14 points and 17 rebounds and Brianna Losee added 13 and seven boards. Alton finished with 12 points in the win.
Hotham had 15 points and six rebounds in the 52-43 loss to the Seawolves Saturday.
UMPI swept UNB-St. John, winning Saturday’s game, 70-62, while taking the Sunday meeting, 73-43.
Anthony Chacho’s 23 points led the way in the first one. Maurice Harris and Chase Vicaire had 12 and 11 points, respectively.
In Sunday’s rematch, Harris had 16 points and seven rebounds, while Vicaire and Chacho netted 15 points each and both grabbed six rebounds. Brandon McGill was also in double figures with 12 points.
The Owls are now 7-7 heading into a home game against Bowdoin Tuesday, Jan. 12 beginning at 7 p.m.
The UMPI women will play in the Vermont Tech Tournament Jan. 12 and 13.
On Thursday, the Villa Maria Vikings of Buffalo, N.Y. were in Presque Isle to take on the UMPI squads in a doubleheader. The men won in overtime, 74-68. Harris had 16 points and nine rebounds and Nick Lenhard contributed 14 points for the Owls.
The women lost the early matchup, 86-57, despite 12 points from Hotham and 11 from Katie Patenaude.
