PI loses 3 more hockey games
The Wildcat hockey team is still looking for its first win after dropping three matches on the road last week.
Presque Isle’s recent stretch began with a 4-0 loss at Winslow last Wednesday. Jacob Grenier had two goals for the Black Raiders, while Andrew Beals and Ben Grenier combined to stop 21 shots in goal for the shutout. Jillian Flynn faced 28 shots for PI and made numerous excellent saves, including four on breakaways.
“I thought we played a decent game,” said Wildcat coach Carl Flynn. “Our youthfulness led to a handful of mistakes and Winslow capitalized.”
The following afternoon, also in Winslow, Messalonskee attacked the ’Cats with 50 shots en route to a 7-1 victory. Brandon Nale, Jared Cunningham and Dylan Brown scored two goals each for the Eagles, while freshman Bailey York had his first career goals. Jillian Flynn started in goal and gave way to Andre Daigle during the third period.
“It was a hard-fought game against one of the top teams in the state,” said coach Flynn.
The Wildcats played John Bapst close on Saturday at Bangor’s Sawyer Arena, but Kodi Legassie’s fourth goal of the game with 1:38 to play broke a tie and gave the Crusaders the 4-3 victory.
Presque Isle trailed 3-1, but battled back to tie the match on a goal by York with five minutes to play in the final period. Jack Andrus and Jaren Winger scored PI’s other goals and Flynn faced 30 shots.
“We showed a lot of fight and it was a great comeback,” said the coach. “Although we didn’t win, we are improving each game and closing the gap.”
The Wildcats take their 0-7 record into Thursday’s home match against the Houlton/Hodgdon/Southern Aroostook Blackhawks.
