City Council kicks off new year
The Presque Isle City Council met on Monday to prepare for a pretty important year ahead.
Presque Isle’s new city councilor, Natilee Graves, was sworn in along with returning councilor Mike Chasse, who was also voted to serve deputy chair of the council. Councillor Emily Smith was voted to a fifth term as chair of the council.
The year 2016 will bring the completion of Presque Isle’s new community center and an outdoor market space slated for completion by May. The construction of the community center is pretty much on time, and may even be finished early before October, according to the project’s ombudsman.
With the community center and its payments in the city budget finally a reality, one of the city council’s main challenges in the coming years will be keeping a lid on property taxes.
At the next council meeting, Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 5 p.m., councilors will be discussing ideas for goals to set in the next two years with City Manager Martin Puckett. Puckett said he and staff across city departments are putting together a list of priorities, concerns and proposals.
