Pelkey wins Easton’s geography bee

Alexis Pelkey, an eighth grade student at Easton Junior/Senior High School, won the school competition of the National Geographic Bee on Jan. 7, 2016 and a chance at a $50,000 college scholarship.
The school Bee, at which students answered questions on geography, was the first round in the 28th annual National Geographic Bee. Thousands of schools around the United States and in the five U.S. territories are participating in the 2016 Bee.
The school champions take a written test; up to 100 of the top scorers on that test in each state will then be eligible to compete in their state bee on April 1. The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C., for state winners to participate in the national championship rounds May 22-25.
The National Geographic Society is one of the world’s largest nonprofit scientific and educational organizations.
2016 Kiwanis calendars available
Easton Kiwanis Club’s Community Birthday Calendars have been ordered and will be coming soon. Because of a lack of personnel, many of their past customers were not contacted this year, but an ample supply of calendars will be available for purchase. The cost is $10. Please contact Keith or Esther Richardson at 488-6101 to ensure you get your calendars.
Food pantry
Workers at the Friends Helping Friends food pantry would like to express heartfelt thanks to the citizens, churches, the PTO, students at both schools, the Kiwanis Club and Cub Scouts for all the contributions to the food pantry during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season. Many friends and neighbors in Easton were greatly blessed by your giving.

Girl Scouts in need of troop leader
The Easton Girl Scouts are currently looking for adult volunteers to lead a new troop of girls in Kindergarten and grade one.
Troop 691, the troop currently based in Easton, can no longer take on younger girls in order to better care for their current members of girls in grades 2-8. A second troop and new leaders are needed to keep the Girl Scouting traditions and experiences alive in our great community of Easton.
Anyone can apply to be a Girl Scout volunteer. You do not have to be a Girl Scout mom to be a leader. Dads, grandparents, aunts, uncles and even moms with sons who just want some “girl time” can apply to be a volunteer!
Each troop needs two unrelated, Girl Scouts of Maine-approved volunteers, one of which is a female, to work together as its leaders. Those interested in being a volunteer or if you have a daughter who would like to join Girl Scouts should contact Kris Lento at 207-488-2632 or krislento@gmail.com.
Happy Days Club
The Happy Days Senior Citizens’ Club will meet on Thursday, Jan. 14 at 11:30 a.m. in the recreation room at the Manor. They will be providing pizza. Please plan to join them and bring a friend!
Kiwanis meetings
Kiwanis Club of Easton meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month from 6-7 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall; every is welcome to attend. Dinner provided for a small fee. Please plan to join them.
