Garfield couple are named top landowners
ASHLAND NEWS
Edward and Marilyn Chase of Garfield Plantation were presented with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife’s Small Landowner of the Year award for 2015. The award was presented to the couple recently at their home.
The Chases were recognized for allowing the use of their land to the public and local organizations. Not only have they allowed the use of their land, they have encouraged and at times “insisted” their land be used by local organizations such as the Boy Scouts, who have held Scout Camporees. The couple have seen generations of Scouts who have camped in the fields and learned many skills in their woodlot.
The Chases have also welcomed the snowmobile trail system through their property. In addition, the Chases have helped to build and have generously supported a cross country ski trail system on their land which, in Mr. Chase’s words, is “top notch”; and all who utilize and enjoy these trails would agree.
Maine Game Warden Dave Milligan presented the couple with a plaque and a specially produced print on behalf of the DIFW. Letters of support for the Chases’ nomination were submitted by Boy Scout Pack #179, Cub Scout Pack #179, the Ashland Snowmobile Club and the Ashland Cross Country Ski Club.
After the award presentation, nearly three dozen volunteers accompanied Mr. Chase to clear brush and blowdowns from around the nearly four miles of cross country ski trails in preparation for the season.
