Rotary Club

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met Feb. 2 at the Aroostook Health Center and the special speaker was Central Aroostook High School junior Dayna McCrum, who is the state president of the FFA. She is spending quite a bit of time visiting FFA chapters around Maine. McCrum will attend events this year in New York, Washington D.C. and Louisville. In spite of her busy schedule, she said she is maintaining her grades at a very high level.
She spoke to the club about her recent trip to South Africa on an International Leadership Seminar with 74 other FFA state officers. They left for their 18-hour flight on Jan. 2 and returned Jan. 19. They stayed in hotels in both Johannesburg and Cape Town while they visited various farms and camps.
Items seen at the farms they visited were carrots, flowers, mangos, potatoes, grapes and olives. Others farms had alligators, goats and dairy cattle. At the dairy farm they visited, around 2,000 cows were milked in a three-hour span of time. The milk was sent for processing nearby into butter and cheese as well as drinking milk. One of their trips was to a safari camp, where they saw hippos, giraffes, cheetahs and penguins.
McCrum learned that they plant potatoes year round and don’t rotate the crops. They are staggered so when the potatoes are ready to dig, they go directly to be processed and storage is not necessary.
One special night, they were served a 14-course meal. She managed to eat anything that was set before her by telling herself “it’s chicken.” All told, she traveled 19,474 miles on seven planes and saw one amazing country!
