PRESQUE ISLE — The Presque Isle Regional Career and Technical Center (PIRCTC) at Presque Isle High School joined last week, Feb. 8-12, in celebrating National Career and Technical Education (CTE) Week, said PIRCTC Director Tim Prescott.
To help mark the occasion, the center opened its doors and invited the community in to see some of its many features.
The center boasts its own tropical fish lab, where community members can purchase fish for their home aquariums. Tours were offered of the lab, and in addition the public was invited to stop by the center to tour the facility on Friday, Feb. 12.
Among the programs the center offers are agriscience, building trades, business, drafting/engineering, early childhood education and farm mechanics. Participants are high school students from Ashland, Caribou, Easton, Fort Fairfield, Mars Hill, Presque Isle and Washburn.
The students are exposed to many other occupations such as masonry, aquaculture and natural resources.
In addition to classroom learning, SAD 1 operates the 38-acre educational SAD 1 School Farm and Farm Store, where students plant, harvest and sell the crops that are produced. Among its many highlights the farm has more than 2,500 apple trees, and also produces honey.
Students share their skills by undertaking several community service projects each year. Past projects have included building a small house for an elderly community member, building garages and other buildings for local churches, constructing handicapped ramps for those with disabilities, and even building a doghouse for the local police department for their canine officer.
