The Wildcats won a pair of home games last week, including a wild one over Old Town/Orono, 7-6, Thursday.
In that one, Presque Isle jumped out to a 5-1 lead after two periods, only to see the Black Bears scored five unanswered goals to take the lead with 4:40 remaining.
Trailing 6-5, PI freshman Jake Stevens scored the equalizer with 1:14 left off a Thomas Patenaude assist before Denny Young netted the game-winner with 46 seconds to go, with Stevens providing the assist.
Bailey York and Cooper Madore scored two goals each and Denny Young added the other to help stake the ’Cats to the early advantage. Patenaude and Stevens both ended with three assists, while Madore and Winger each had one.
Jillian Flynn saved 37 of 43 shots in goal for PI, while Chase Albert and Kohl Parker combined to stop 27 of 34 for Old Town/Orono.
Trailing 1-0, Stevens scored a hat trick and Patenaude added a short-handed goal in the third period to lead PI to a 4-1 comeback win over Houlton/Hodgdon/Southern Aroostook/Katahdin in a home game played last Tuesday. Young notched three assists, while York, Jack Andrus and Madore each had one for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats outshot the Blackhawks, 42-30, with Flynn in goal for PI and Nate Lilly for the guests.
“All our goals were gritty battles and all scored by our freshmen,” said coach Carl Flynn. “We finally showed some fight late in the game.”
On Monday, the Wildcats played their final home game and were beaten by Hampden Academy, 5-2. PI broke out to a 2-1 lead on goals by York and Alex Brewer, but the Broncos came from behind to win it. Cole Benner got the win in goal, facing 35 shots, while Flynn faced 29 for PI.
The Wildcats took a 5-11 record into their finale at No. 1 Waterville, played yesterday.
