PE major receives statewide award

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine University of Maine at Presque Isle Physical Education major Kelsey Churchill received a major honor in her professional field of study after being named an outstanding future professional by the executive board of the Maine Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MAHPERD).

Churchill, an UMPI senior from Washburn who is doing her student teaching this spring, was chosen to represent MAHPERD at the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) America Eastern District Association Conference, being held this year in Atlantic City May 22-24, 2016. She was among just five students from Maine colleges singled out for the honor, and one of two who will represent Maine at the SHAPE conference in May.
“MAHPERD’s Executive Board is truly impressed with Kelsey’s achievements and the leadership qualities that she possesses,” Andy Gray, president of MAHPERD, said. “I have no doubt that the convention and the OFP Program experience will be of great benefit to her personally and professionally.”
According to the SHAPE America Eastern District website, award eligibility is based on academic achievement, involvement in university organizations, contributions to academic program and the community, and participation in HPERD organizations. Recipients also exhibit professional potential and leadership qualities and have demonstrated their skills and capabilities through individual accomplishments, honors and awards.
The Outstanding Future Professional Award reflects Eastern District’s commitment to future leaders. Each state, district and territory in the Eastern District is eligible to submit two outstanding future professionals for recognition at the district level.
Churchill has attended the Phi Eta Sigma (National Honor Society) National Leadership Convention, serves as treasurer of the UMPI PE Majors Club, and is a National Honor Society award winner.
“Kelsey is an outstanding young woman who is truly committed to her profession and I believe she is an outstanding role model for students,” Gray said.
UMPI and its physical education program are similarly pleased with Churchill’s achievements and the anticipated impact she will make in the professional field after graduation.
“I am truly proud of Kelsey,” said Christine Standefer, professor emerita of physical education. “She is a truly outstanding student in the field of Physical Education who will continue to grow professionally as she gains experience in the field.”
